Question:   my daughter is married [14 years] to a terrific guy who did not have Jewish parents. he was brought up in a 98% Jewish town and is almost Jewish by osmossis. When he married my daughter he agreed to bring up the children as Jews, approximatly 2 years ago my daughter joined a Chabbad and has becomethe most observant Jew I have ever met. Her rabbi has made it impossible for her to stay married to the most wonderful man. Can you help?

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   First, there is no such thing as becoming Jewish by osmosis. Second, your daughter in fact, if she has become observant, understands what her responsibilites are to her children and her husband. First, it is not "impossible" for her to stay with him. Is she a Kohen? Are you a Kohen? Second, if not, what formal steps has this young man, the man she is married to by secular union, taken to conversion. Is he willing to take these steps and this course of study, learning and observance. If so, then it is not impossible. What is required is a vital commitment on his part to begin and get serious with your local Chabad Rabbi to make his conversion. Again, it is certainly not easy, but it may be possible.

Question:   hey, I have a friend in Washington State that is looking for people to ride with who follow the torah and it's priciples...do you have any members up there he could hook up with?

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   There is one Jewish Motorcycle club in the United States that meets this criteria and the creation of these kinds of relationships. The organization is "Lions of Judea ", a newly formed club seated on basic Torah principles yet appealing to all Jews from every walk of life. As well as being a philanthropic organization. Part of their mission is to connect other Jews with these values who ride motorcycles. Of course there is no riding on Shabbat or the Chagim and meals are based on Kashruth to meet everyone's needs. Our home is Kosher, We have Shabbos every Friday Night ( meal, candles,Kiddish etc.) but we ride on Saturdays. I wear a yalmulka and my business is shomer shabbot. My 1st daughter, from my previous marriage is 20 years old. She's an Angel. My 1st wife came from the Famous 'Malavsky Family' & 'Choir' led by Chazzan Shmuel Malavsky my ex-wifes grand-daughter. My daughter went to Yeshiva up until 10th grade. She then went to the local public H.S.. 3 years ago she met a Goiy and they have been together ever since. She knows right from wrong but refuses to see how bad this is. Her comments are " well, if you ALL love me so much why can't you just be happy for me and be thankful that I'm with a person who treats me right and I love" My recent experience with the Chabbad has been very positive and I'm wondering if you have some words off wisdom or even a battle plan we can adopt. There is alot more to the story and details that just can't be put her. But hopefully you got enough to bring you up to speed....Zei Gezunt Marc, Dovid Yisroel ha Kohane

Subject:   tattoos

Submitted By:   jordan silver

Question:   I have herd many diferent things about the subject and I wanted to know what are the laws on tattoos in the jewish reigion

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Several reasons: First, Tattoing is a pagan ritual. We dc not follow those practices. Two, our bodies belong to Hashem, we are only renting it. The torah teaches us that we should leave it just the way G-D made it for us. With regard to what to do if you have one, try and have it removed if it's not too painful. Otherwise, please don't get another one.

Submitted By:   Richard Uaanis

Question:   Rabbi Why is it that your club acts so "closed", or even so separatist? I inquired about riding with your group but since I'm not Jewish, I wasn't exactly welcomed. I inquired into other religious m/c groups and all of them were more than welcoming to me. You may ask "why do you want to ride with a religious m/c club"? It's because I find so many m/c riders are so into the tattoos, drugs, alcohol, biker babes, skulls, other demonic images, etc. which I have absolutely no desire for. I just like to ride with others who are generally friendly and nice people. It "seems" that motorcycling tends to bring out the worse in people, I've found through actual experience that most want to embrace a certain image of a HA or "bad boy biker", which I'm not. Any thoughts here?

Subject:   sometimes kosher, sometimes not....

Submitted By:   David Margolis

Question:   B"H Hi Rav Zig Zag, I am in LA riding with and a member of the Bluestar Cruiser club. Thier website is Bluestarcruisers.com No doubt bluestar cruisers is a fine club with fine people. I would like to ask youre opinion how I should deal with the club when they choose to go to restaurants that are not kosher. The president of the club used to own - manage one of the most popular kosher pizza restaurants in town. I believe now he owns the building where the restaurant is; not so much runs the restaurant lately. However, he doesn't always direct the to club to kosher restaurants to meet. Often he does, often he doesn't. We even used to meet at his Pizza place. On longer rides where the club will stop at some non kosher place, I just stop and go off somehwere to eat by myself. That has got uninspiring. On the weekly meetings where they meet in town in some place I can't go, I usually don't bother showing up. The club will go for several weeks at very fine local kosher restaurants with excellent hashkachas and then go for another place a few times that isn't kosher. Do you have any suggestions? Its been like this since they started since Yom Atzmeut almost 2 years now. I have had success in getting a few riders to put teffilin, bench in the restaurants and do other yiddishkiet. I am alone at this point with the club and its not getting any easier with the yiddishkiet. Good Yom tov for the upcoming Pesach days. David

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Happy Pesach David, Keep your head high and keep the faith my holy brother. There are lots of Jews who ride in LA. More than you think. As for kashrus. There are pre made meals you can warm in your bags next to your pipes. Pretty good too. Really, I'm not kidding steak chicken etc. Kosher Mart makes them. Stay positive. Hashem has very special plans for you. Keep putting on tefillin with other Jews. Show them how to strap on that leather baby. Let them know how cool it is to coneect to the Creator! Try associating with some folks at the Chabad. They can give you some great support. Just let me know where your at and I'll hook you up. Ride on Rabbi Zach

Subject:   Shabbat activity at Ride to Remember

Submitted By:   Jan Ditzian

Question:   Rabbi Betes, I hope to attend the Ride to Remember in May 2005. I am trying to decide whether to stay for Shabbat or to return home. The home trip is a push to make in half a day (250 miles), so I am thinking about staying for Friday and Saturday night. I live in a rural area, and get to a Conservative Shabbat minyan by driving, but I do not drive elsewhere on Shabbat. At home, I have worked out food for Shabbat, but I would like to know what I should do for food if I decide to stay in the hotel you recommend and attend the Orthodox or Chabad service. If you want to know more about me, just e-mail. I am also interested in the Shabbat activities that these shuls might have on the day after the Yid motorcycle gang ride. By the way, I ride a 1973 BMW R75/5 that I have owned for 32 years. Shalom, Jan

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Happy Pesach Jan, How you get back and forth to shul is your business brother. The Chabad has no labels. We get EVERYONE from the reformed to orthodox. There are no labels. Every Jew is treated with respect and vice versa. So stay at the Churchill Hotel in DC. Let them know your with the JMA aand they will give you a special rate and you'll be ten steps from the shul. After 33 years without a bike, I've just resumed riding with a Suzuki GS500 that I swapped my boat for. I'm the only Jewish biker in this region (Walla Walla, Washington), so there's not much sense in trying to start a chapter here, but I do enjoy getting the King David newsletter in my e-mail.

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Shevua Tov Eliyahu. You asked the question so I will answer. Riding a motorcycle on Shabbat or any other vehicle is prohibited by Torah. I'm not sure that you are the only Jew in Walla Walla. I will check for you. Rabbi Zach

Subject:   kippah

Submitted By:   Eliyahu Rooff

Question:   My kippah tends to slide around under my helmet when I ride, and I'm curious as to the "accepted" practice for Jewish riders -- Is the helmet sufficient head covering; would a "do-rag" be a satisfactory replacement on rides, or do I just need to keep close watch on the kippah? Incidentally, I just traded my Suzuki GS500 in on a nice Kawasaki Drifter. Much more comfortable for this 57-year-old on long rides.

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   So put a kippah on under the dew rag. Then you can lay tefillin without having to look for a kippah!

Subject:   What have you learned from your bike?

Submitted By:   Dorothy Waldman

Question:   With so many Christian Motorcycle Ministries out there, I was delighted to see Jewish riders! I am working on a book (working title: The Bikers Guide to Life)and need stories from bikers about their experiences and what they have learned from riding. I've interviewed Herb Bridge (Chair Ben Bridge Jewelers) and others, but need more stories from other parts of the country. Would you or someone in your congregation be interested in being interviewed? For more info on me, go to www.TexasBikerBabe.com Thanks, Dorothy

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Dear Dorothy, Darlin, I have got so much to say to you. I will be on tour this Spring doing Mitvahs for the Klal. Perhaps we can get together for an interview. Question:   Hi Rabbi I am in the process of starting a chapter of KDB in Johannesburg South Africa. There has been a lot of interest but many don't want the club name to sound too Jewish and want it open to those 'wishing to be associated with a Jewish club'. I know some of these have married out but still feel a longing to be part of a Jewish organisation. My gut feel is to welcome all with the idea that people will get more involved in their Juadism but obviously the above brings certain problems with it. Please let me have your thought as well as experiences in this regard relative to your involvement at KDB. Regards Ian

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Dear Ian, Remember, we are Jews first and bikers second. I could go on for days with proofs on how this works. but we've only got 2 inches of air space so. Be proud to be a King David Biker. This means that you are Jewish and you ride a motorcycle. If you want it to be something else then, it is your decision to be something else. Just remember what a King David Biker is. If you are not Jews who ride motorcycles then you are something else. If you wish to go further with this you may contact me directly at rabbizigzag@bellsouth.net. Behatzlocha, Rabbi Z

Question:   IS IT WRONG FOR A JEW TO HAVE TATTOOS?

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   I WILL NOT PULL PUNCHES. HASHEM GAVE YOU THIS BODY ON LOAN. IT BELONGS TO HIM. IT IS PERFECT JUST THE WAY IT IS. TATTOOING IS A PAGAN RITUAL. WE DO NOT COPY PAGAN RITUALS. PERIOD. DO WHAT YOU WANT. BUT IF YOUR ASKING THE ANSWER IS. IF YOU'VE GOT ONE AND YOU CAN REMOVE IT DO IT. OTHERWISE JUST DON'T GET ANOTHER ONE. SHINE FROM THE INSIDE OUT. NOT THE OUTSIDE IN.

Subject:   faithless

Submitted By:   Carla Greenberg

Question:   How do I follow a g-d who chooses to place defenceless people in a dry, barren and infertile land, withhold food and water from them and give to them disease for which they stand no chance of defeating? I speak of those souls in disease ravaged countries, war plagued continents where innocence is served up on the dinner plate every day and slaughtered as though as though it were meant to be that way. I have lost my faith in my g-d and perhaps you cannot help me from so many miles away, but I thought I would say hi anyway, up here in the cold and stormy Winnipeg Manitoba Canada. Shalom.

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   Dearest Carla, You have asked a very good question, and a timely one at that. My first response is if you are blaming G-D for everything that has happened bad in the world today, just as yesterday such as. Adam and Eve, Sodom and Gomorrah, The Flood of Noah, The Jews in Slavery in Egypt, The Chorban (The Babylonian Exile), The Spanish Inquisition, The Destruction of the Beit Hamikdash (The Holy Temple), Hitler and Nazi Germany, 911, The Pogroms, Anti Semitism, Black Slavery, Prejudice, The Arab Israeli Conflict, Starvation, Disease, Pestilence, Germ Warfare, Bio Terrorism, Nuclear Holocaust and we know the list goes on and on.. If so, the OPPOSITE MUST ALSO BE TRUE. AND THEN SO MUST WE ALSO BE COMPLETELY AND TOTALLY THANKFUL TO A CREATOR WHO HAS GIVEN US ALL THE GOOD IN THE WORLD TODAY? WHO HAS GIVEN US "A CHOICE” Because ultimately we know we are given "Free Will". The Ability to choose "THE RIGHT PATH" OR TO CHOOSE “THE WRONG OR EVIL PATH" OR EVEN WORSE, "TO COMPLAIN AND DO NOTHING." And so I ask you could it be that Hashem wants us to "DO SOMETHING”? Sure if everything was just "Good" all the time we could wake up in the morning, not have to make any decisions that were meaningful, moving, important, or that made a difference. We could simply go on with our lives thinking only of ourselves and saying "It's all good". Just like a cow in a pasture, or an ant, or any creation in nature that does not have "Free Choice". WE ARE THE ZENITH OF CREATION. What does this mean? And More important what did Hashem mean when he created us and said, "It was good"... At whatever level of learning you may have about "The Torah". Understand we as Jews do not just understand it in only its literal translation. The true study of Torah tells us SO MUCH MORE. It is not just a history book, IT IS OUR BLUEPRINT FOR LIVING, but even in its literal interpretation we know the teachings of Hashem our Creator are only the teachings of "Goodness and Kindness". Doing Torah and Mitzvahs to glorify Him and strengthen our connection to Him and to each other. In this week's Torah Portion we read and study from the Book of Shemot or "Exodus" In this Torah Portion" named “Va'eira" which means "I revealed myself” to Moses and to The Jewish People. G-D commands Moses to approach Pharaoh show him G-D's signs and wonders and say "Let my People Go". G-d informs Moses that he will "Harden the heart“of Pharaoh so that these signs and wonders on behalf of the Jewish people will assure the Jews will be freed from the land of Egypt. And so Moses goes to Pharoah, with signs and with wonders from Hashem and still Pharoah not only says NO, he makes it even harder on them. Moses approaches Hashem saying "Why have you done this?" I only made it worse. Now we are being treated even worse than before. But Hashem insists that Moses continue with His plan. That he not "LOSE FAITH" and that he trust in the will of G-D. And so the Nile was turned to Blood, then Frogs, then Vermin and the list goes on. More of these physical signs to make it clear that, The Creator of all Worlds and all Creation is giving the orders and still, Pharoah challenges and not until the final tenth plague does Pharoah finally relent and says. GO! AVITAZEN! SOYONARA! SHALOM! So what do you think? That it was that easy? That every Jew just said OK let's go. Not so simple. THE SIGNS AND WONDERS WERE ALSO TO TEACH EVERY JEW THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSON OF ALL..... It is important to understand that during our slavery in Egypt we were at an all time low in our faith. Just think, no shuls, no matzoh balls, no kreplach, no knishes, No Bagels. Man I mean we were really at an all time low, while Pharoah is bathing himself in the blood of young Jewish infants. With every sign, with every wonder, our people began to understand that "They were not alone". Moses took up the staff for the Jewish People and Aaron spoke for him. G-D reveals Himself in a way he did not to Abraham Isaac or Jacob. In such a way that the Jewish Nation begins to "intellectually" understand that no matter how difficult their connection with G-D may be. No matter how far they have fallen into despair, with every sign and with every wonder that is GOOD AND WONDERFUL AND MAKES US SMILE AND MAKES US CRY every Jew must “DO SOMETHING” AND CARE FOR ANOTHER. WE CAN LET OUR EVIL INCLINATION OR OUR “YETZER HARAH” TELL US THAT G-D IS LETTING BAD THINGS HAPPEN. AND DO NOTHING ……… OR, WE CAN LOOK OUT FOR OTHERS, STAND FAST TO OUR HERITAGE TO OUR CREATOR, TO OUR FAMILIES, TO OUR FAITH. IN THIS WAY WE CAN DO REAL ACTS OF TORAH, Supporting those that do not have, caring for new born children , respecting our Mothers and Fathers, giving to those that have nothing or even less. We can support our synagogues and our Rabbi’s. We can be part of our community and MAKE A DIFFERENCE. THIS IS THE MESSAGE OF OUR CREATOR AND OF OUR TORAH. This is not only a good thing, it is our responsibility and it is “OUR MISSION”. So what can we believe in? Being a Giver and Not a Taker is a beginning. So we learn from this Physical Redemption From SLAVERY TO FREEDOM that through these elements of trial and tribulation we can always overcome them through acts of kindness and concern for others and MOST IMPORTANT THROUGH OUR FAITH IN OUR CREATOR, can we achieve our "Spiritual Redemption". And so my Dearest Carla, my advice to you is this. Shabbat is just around the corner. Friday night at whatever time the sun sets by you. Call all your friends (especially Biker Friends) and loved ones, invite them over. Make a nice big fire in your fireplace “before Shabbat” Light the Shabbat candles. (If you need to know the blessing just email me and I’ll tell you). Make Kiddush on a big bottle of wine. Have some challah. Eat a nice meal, Have vodka or a scotch or two or three. Put your feet up . Then you can say, “Baruch Hashem” Blessed is G-D. And guess what you’re off to a great start. Cause Sunday is the first day of the rest of your life baby! SO MAKE IT COUNT! May Hashem Bless you and yours. RIDE ON RABBI ZIG ZAG

Question:   Short storey: When my daughter was expecting her first child and we found out it was a boy I started to call him my "Little Prince". His name was going to be "Aiden" (an Irish name-and we are Irish/American). The day before he was born she changed her mind and decided to name the baby after her deceased father, David. When he was born at 9lbs, 7 oz...I said forget the Prince title...he's huge...He's the King! And so King David was born. He is known throughtout the family as "King David". My question to you is....Do you have any apparel with your organization's name on it? I think it's great what you are doing. I watch the Jewish show on PBS on Sunday mornings. I find the religion and the people fascinating, interesting and intrigueing. (Excuse my spelling and grammer.) Hope to hear from you and good luck with your organization! Question:   Rabbi, When I roll a doobe, it seems to fall apart. Do I need more or less humidity?

Rabbi ZigZag's Answer:   DEAR GUNNER, THERE'S ONLY ONE KOSHER WAY TO ROLL A KOSHER DOOBEE. MAKE SURE TWIST BOTH ENDS AND TWIRL IT ON YOUR TONGUE SO IT'S MOIST BEFORE IT GOES IN THE HUMIDOR. AND DO NOT SMOKE IT ON SHABBOS.
